On Wednesday April 20th at 1PM ET health care practitioners and people interested in healthcare from across Canada and beyond will gather on twitter to participate in the weekly #HCSMCA (Health Care Social Media Canada) conversation.

#HCSMCA has been gathering followers and participants – more than 1000 and counting – since it launched in September 2010.

The conversation has usually been moderated by the wonderful and dedicated Colleen Young but now the group is really beginning to self-organize and share the role of leadership.

Moderators from various health care groups from across Canada will take the proverbial conch shell every Wednesday to lead the discussion.

The moderators will introduce ideas and direct the conversation towards their areas of expertise or practice, and in this way #HCSMCA will deepen its roots in specific communities and become a more meaningful national resource.

Please join the conversation on Wednesday April 20th as we discuss health care in Canada through the lens of interprofessional collaboration.

You can participate early by posting a topic that you’d like to see discussed during HCSMCA here.

It’ll be an awesome opportunity to engage the community across the Canada and make some new connections.

See you there!

If you’re active on Facebook, Twitter or any other social media channels please let your followers know what’s happening at #NaHSSA11 by including the hashtag in your posts.

What is a hashtag?

A hashtag is a short word or acronym attached to a # that acts as an archival signifier on social media sites like twitter.

It is used so that people can easily find all mentions from many different sources made on twitter for a particular event. This means that people can follow ideas and observations about the event even if they’re not in the room.

Hashtags are archived on twitter and by Google and can be referenced by anyone during or after an event.

It’s a powerful collaborative and informative tool.

You can check out who’s talking about #NaHSSA by clicking here: TweetChat.com.

Here’s a sample:

Social Media 101 Powerful tools for real-time collaboration & interprofessional knowledge sharing. These social media tools provide huge opportunities for collaboration, interactivity, knowledge sharing and real-time information updates.

They help to increase our ability to put the patient first and to share information very quickly about public health risks around the world or across the city.

Q: “But what are these tools and how do they work?” A: “In order to understand how these tools work together to create these exciting opportunities for collaboration we need to look at the most important piece of our Social Media strategy: The CIHC Blog!

Welcome to the first post that I’ll be writing to help friends and colleagues at CIHC understand the power, scope and potential of social media.

I am working on finishing a document right now called “Social Media 101: A simple guide to understanding how to utilize and interact with the CIHC Blog, Facebook, Twitter and RSS Feeds.”

It’s a catchy name, I know.

That document will be available here on the Blog, too, but I think that it’s important for friends and colleagues to see some of the true visionaries of our time discuss these ideas.

I believe that these documents and videos will help us to further develop our approach to using social media tools to improve interprofessional collaboration and increasingly put the patient first.

If you have not yet watched Dr Jennifer Gardy’s amazing TEDx Terry lecture on Health Care in the 21st Century then that’s an excellent place to start.

Please comment below with any questions or suggestions that you may have.
